Welcome First Choice Day Care
My name is Hewan Mengistu, and I am the founder and director of First Choice Daycare. Caring for children has always been more than a career for me—it is my passion and my life’s purpose.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Trinity Washington University and a Human Resources Certification from UC San Diego. Throughout my career, I have been committed to continuous learning and professional growth because I believe every child deserves the highest quality care and education.
Before opening First Choice Daycare, I spent more than 20 years in retail management, leading teams of over 40 employees and developing strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. I also served as a Mental Health Advocate and Project Manager with the African Coalition for Mental Health in Los Angeles, where I worked to support individuals and families through advocacy, education, and community outreach.
Since founding First Choice Daycare in 2019, I have had the privilege of building meaningful relationships with children and families throughout our community. The trust families place in me is something I value deeply. Many of our new enrollments come through parent referrals and positive reviews, which reflects the strong connections we have built over the years.
At First Choice Daycare, I believe that every child is unique and capable of amazing growth when provided with a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment. Our program is inspired by the educational philosophies of Maria Montessori and Jean Piaget, encouraging children to learn through exploration, creativity, independence, and hands-on experiences.

First Choice Daycare recognizes and respects the unique differences of the families we serve. Therefore, we have chosen to implement an anti-bias curriculum. We strive to provide activities that are multicultural, gender fair and disability sensitive. We follow Washington DC Model for School readiness- which is always being reviewed and updated by the Washington DC department of Education. Our curriculum is broken down into language/literacy, mathematics, science, social/emotional skills, cognitive development, health and physical development, and social studies.
